ABOUT US
Refugee Learning Center is a community-based initiative in Cisarua, Indonesia, created by refugees, for refugees. We restore purpose, dignity, and connection for people living in prolonged uncertainty.
OUR STORY
Because Indonesia is not a signatory to the 1951 Refugee Convention or its 1967 Protocol, refugees living in the country are denied access to basic legal rights—including access to formal public education and legal employment. Left without official safety nets, families face an open-ended period of displacement without the ability to work or send their children to local schools.
In response to this legal reality, the Refugee Learning Center (RLC) was established in 2015 as a community-based initiative created by refugees, for refugees.
RLC is more than a place of learning; it is a community hub where refugees come together to support one another through education, social connection, and shared responsibility. Our network brings together individuals from countries including Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Iran to build a safe, non-denominational space that fosters belonging, resilience, and mutual support.

WHY OUR WORK MATTERS
With official resettlement timelines now stretching up to 15+ years—often with no guarantee of placement—the center provides vital structure, stability, and a sense of normal life for families living in limbo.
FOR CHILDREN
RLC delivers access to education, structured routines, socialization, and personal development in a nurturing environment.
FOR ADULTS & YOUTH
RLC creates meaningful roles as teachers, coordinators, and administrators. Volunteering enables adults to build skills, regain lost confidence, and contribute actively to their community.
FOR THE WHOLE COMMUNITY
We provide vocational skill development, basic medical support, and initiatives that promote wellbeing, self-reliance, and community engagement.

WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT
Because refugees in Indonesia are not permitted to work, our center is 100% volunteer-run by refugee managers, teachers, and supportive parent representatives.
We do everything we can with our community's shared energy, but we cannot do it alone. Every operational cost—including classroom rent, utilities, text books, learning resources, and equipment—is covered entirely by donations from generous global supporters.
